Abstract: Innovative food supplement based on biological lycopene, which is the bulk product, i.e.the total extract, obtained by treating with supercritical carbon dioxide extraction matrix, made by 50% biological tomato berries and 50% biological dry fruits (almonds, nuts and the like) and/or other components, following a co-extractive technology. Tomatoes berries are conveniently de-hydrated milled and riddled, the co-extraction matrix (dry fruits, vegetables, others) is conveniently de-hydrated and milled. The obtained total extract is directly used for preparing lycopene base food supplements without any modification or additivation. With respect to the known commercial food supplement, based on lycopene, cuch biological lycopenehas unique quality features: the total extract is 100% natural, absense of chemical solvents, lycopene concentration in the final natural formula (not artificial); absence dosing problems and contraindications. In the final product lycopene is mixed with with other natural antioxidants co-extracted from used vegetables. THE NEW MANUFACTURING PROCESS: CO2 SUPERCRITICAL CONDITIONS an innovative process for the extraction of lycopene from tomato using supercritical carbon dioxide in the presence of vegetable oil as co-solvent. The presence of the co-solvent improves the yields of the lycopene extract and has a beneficial role in the stability of the pigment. A complete description of the extraction process is also reported. The experiments carried out with and without co-solvent at pressures and temperatures ranging from 335 to 450 bar and 45 to 70 °C, respectively, bar have shown that the amount of the extractable lycopene depends on the experimental conditions. Also, the maximum amount of the extractable lycopene from dried tomato (6% of moisture, average particle size of about 1 mm), at 450 bar and 66 °C in the presence of co-solvent and utilizing a flow rate of about 20 kg CO2/h, was 60%. The extracts were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography and UV–vis spectra.

The present invention aims at creating a new product, to be employed as food supplement, based on "biological - organic" lycopene; and of related natural extraction process of lycopene, which can assure very high purity and quality together with a satisfactory extraction efficiency. The present invention sol ves the problems, related to lycopene extraction, being a food supplement, based on biological lycopene, which is extracted t'rom a suitable extraction material (totally or partialIy vegetable) by means of supercritical carbon dioxide and co-extraction technology. The extraction material to be treated. with supercritical carbon dioxide, is made of a mixture, said mixture composed of an extraction matrix and a co-extraction matrix, in the same or different quantities.
Moreover, another object of the invention is the extraction process of Iycopene, by means of carbon dioxide in supercriticaI conditions, from a suitable biological matrix. The carbon dioxide extrac~on from the above matrix leads to a total extract with a Iycopene concentration ranging from 1 to 5 2%, according to the initial Iycopene concentration in the tornato berries. The end product is 100% natural and without any toxic or harmful chemical substance. For this reason, the Iycopene is defined as 'biological or organic lycopene"'...

...The use of biological Iycopene is particularly suitable as high quality food supple- IO ment, as well as pharrnaceutical and cosmetic producI. The quality of lycopene obtained by this process is so different from the one obtained by the traditional processes, that this 'biologica!' lycopene can be considered as a new product. These and other advantages will be pointed out in the 15 detailed description of the invention, that will refer to tables 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 in which some experimental results, arising from the process and the product, and an example of the apparatus realizing the co-extraction process are shown. The antioxidants are able to contrast the destructive action of free radicals in the human body (which are seriously dangerous for the cells and tissues); they carry out a basic protective and preventive function against various diseases. Free radicals are by-products of cellular metabolic processes of the body. They play an important role in a number of biological processes, some of which are necessary for life, such as the intracellular killing of bacteria. However, high quantities of free radicals could be very dangerous for the human body. Because of their extreme reactivity, free radicals can participate in deleterious side reactions resulting in cell damage. The targets of the destructive action of free radicals are the cellular components such as membrane lipids, nucleic acids and proteins.

CANCER AND FREE RADICALS Many types of cancers are probably the result of interactions between free radicals and DNA, resulting in mutations that can adversely affect the cell cycle and potentially lead to malignancy. Free radicals may also be involved in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, arthritis, diabete mellitus, dermatitis and other degenerative diseases.
